Full, fluttering lashes make you look and feel instantly more beautiful. So, whether you're batting your lashes at your latest crush, your significant other, or simply your iPhone camera for a quick Insta-worthy selfie, we've rounded up the tips and tricks from the pros on how to get luscious lashes that would make even Bambi jealous.

1. Gently does it

According to research, we lose an average of 1 to 4 eyelashes per day. If you’re losing more than this, it could be due to allergies to makeup, rubbing your eyes, poor nutrition, or the harsh removal of your eye makeup*. Sarah Brock, an award-winning celebrity makeup artist with 18 years’ experience in the industry, explains that the most important thing is to be gentle. “Lashes are delicate, so try not to rub your eyes throughout the day, and also be careful not to rub too hard when you're removing your mascara at night,” she advises.

Use a gentle makeup remover that's specially formulated to take care of the delicate eye area, including your lashes. We love the award-winning SHISEIDO Instant Eye And Lip Makeup Remover, which also works on waterproof mascara without stripping your lashes of moisture. This way, your lashes are treated and conditioned as your makeup is removed.

2. Long and lush eyelashes

Can you really make your lashes grow longer and thicker? Brock, who recently worked as the makeup artist to Gal Gadot on the Wonder Woman movie, says: “I'm a huge fan of eyelash growth serums. Years ago, I lost a lot of my lashes due to eyelash extensions and using a growth serum definitely helped.” Try SHISEIDO Full Lash Serum, which contains arginine to hydrate and nourish your lashes. 80% of testers in an independent consumer study in the US reported denser-looking lashes after 16 weeks, while 79% said their lashes looked fuller after the same amount of time. It can also be used as a brow serum to shape and encourage eyebrow growth.

3. Stick with it

“You have to be dedicated to using an eyelash growth serum if you want to see results,” Brock explains. “I use mine every night before I go to bed, before applying my eye cream. Apply the lash serum right along the root of your lashes,” she says. Be patient; the results will depend on your individual hair growth cycle, which is different for everyone. “Talking from personal experience, my eyelashes break less and have grown thicker and stronger since using a serum,” reveals Brock.

4. Go natural

Taking the occasional break from mascara can also help your lashes get into optimum condition. Have a Sunday off from wearing eye makeup, or once a week, make sure you remove your makeup as soon as you get home from work. Don't forget to eat a healthy, balanced diet with plenty of green vegetables and protein, too. “Just like for the hair on your head, eating a diet with protein and B Vitamins will help,” agrees Brock.

5. Bat for lashes

While we're not fans of the “fake it 'til you make it” school of thought, applying your mascara properly can give your lashes extra wow factor. Long, thick lashes make your eyes look bigger, which is why mascara is considered an essential beauty tool. Even if you're not a fan of dramatic eye looks, a swipe of great mascara, such as SHISEIDO ImperialLash MascaraInk Waterproof, can open up your eyes, making you look more awake and youthful.

“Always use an eyelash curler,” Brock says. “It's a must-have to give your lashes a lift.” Simply curl lashes twice for each eye, then apply your favorite mascara. Just open the curler and hold it at the base of your lashes, then gently clamp it shut. Hold for a few seconds and repeat on the opposite eye. Make sure you hold the curler still when it’s clamped down, so you don’t pull on your eyelashes. Never use an eyelash curler after you’ve applied mascara, as this can cause lashes to break.

Celebrity makeup artist Sarah Brock suggests the following tricks:
  • 1
Apply your makeup remover to a clean cotton wool pad.
  • 2
Instead of dragging it across the eye, hold the pad on your closed eye for about 10 seconds to allow your makeup to dissolve.
  • 3
Gently slide the pad off your eye, being careful not to drag or pull too heavily.
  • 4
Repeat until your cotton wool pad comes away clean.
  • 5
If applying a foaming cleanser, such as WASO Quick Gentle Cleanser to cleanse and hydrate your skin, do so now and rinse with lukewarm water.
